Champion Trees

A national champion tree is the largest living specimen of its kind growing within in the United States. A point system based on various measurements determines which tree of a given species is the champion.

A state champion is the largest specimen of an individual species in a particular state. Every state now keeps such a list, but the criteria varies from one state to another.

The National Register of Big Trees keeps the official list of national champions. It is published every two years. The information is obtained from various sources, including champion tree lists of individual states. The state with the most national champions is Florida.

The lists change from year to year as old champions die or new ones are discovered. In the past many tremendously large trees were cut down, trees that would be champions now if they were still living.
